Formed in silica-rich Pegmatite veins, it registers a 7 on the Mohs scale.  The most prized material today comes from three regions: Minas Gerais in Brazil, the Vakinankaratra belt of central Madagascar, and northern Mozambique near Niassa and Cabo Delgado. Brazilian deposits provide the largest volume; the crystals are usually opaque to milky, perfect for substantial carvings and spheres.
