Natural smoky citrine is created when quartz containing trace iron experiences gentle geological heat and natural radiation over long periods, turning part of the crystal golden-yellow (citrine) while another portion becomes smoky-brown. Fine examples come from Zambia’s Mapatizya deposit, Namibia’s Erongo Mountains, Madagascar’s Vakinankaratra region, and pockets in Minas Gerais, Brazil and Colorado’s Pikes Peak Batholith. These localities produced crystals with soft honey-to-champagne tones laced with wisps of smoke—far subtler than the bright, uniform orange common in commercial material.
Energetically, smoky citrine weaves together the upbeat confidence of citrine with the steady grounding of smoky quartz.
